About Lew
Beginnings
I was born and grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I went to Mark Twain Elementary School, Monroe Junior High (until it closed), Hayes Junior High for one year, and graduated from Highland in the class of 1978. I earned a BS with a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science from New Mexico Tech in 1982. I moved to Illinois to continue my education with a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1987.
Early Career
After completing my PhD thesis under the direction of Robert Kaufmann, I joined the faculty at the University of California, Riverside as a postdoc for two years. In 1989 my wife (who is als a mathematician) and I moved to the University of New Orleans where we both earned tenure, before moving to Georgia Tech in 1999.
Georgia Tech Career
I joined the School of Mathematics faculty at Georgia Institute of Technology in 1999, serving primarily as their Director of Information Technology (IT). In 2005, I began spending a fraction of my time in the Dean’s Office in the College of Sciences as the College IT Director, and in 2015, I expanded my effort there, taking on the role of Assistant Dean of IT for the College of Sciences.
In 2017, a portion of my responsibilities shifted to the office of the Executive Vice President for Research where I was the Associate Vice President for Research Computing until my retirement in 2023. I am currently an emeritus faculty member in the School of Mathematics.
